Earlier this year, the DfE updated their guidance on what academies, free schools and colleges should publish online. This update is likely to have slipped under many schools’ radar. Read the DfE guidance at

The most significant change is that from September 2018, all of the above entities should be publishing information about the school’s careers programme. The information should relate to the delivery of careers guidance for 12 to 18 year olds and any requirement in your Funding Agreement to deliver careers guidance.

The information that should be included is listed below and should be for the current academic year.

  • The name, email address and telephone number of the school’s Careers Leader
  • A summary of the careers programme, including details of how stakeholders (pupils, parents, teachers and employers) may access information about the career programme
  • How the school measures and assesses the impact of the careers programme on pupils
  • The date of the school’s next review of the information published.

This information should be published in way that the stakeholders can access and understand it.

In addition, the statutory guidance for schools on careers guidance and access of education and training providers (which should be read for more information) states that from January 2018 every school must publish a policy statement setting out the arrangements for provider access and ensure that it is followed. The statutory guidance provides an example policy. Again, this requirement may have gone unnoticed by many schools around the UK.

The guidance goes on further to state that every school should have a member of their governing body who takes a strategic interest in careers education and guidance and encourages employer engagement. Therefore governing bodies may wish to add another “skill requirement” to their next skills audit going forward!

With the summer holidays now here, we recommend that schools take advantage of this “quiet time” to undertake a school website review to ensure they are compliant ahead of the new academic year.
